Start with two birth dates. Moon phase is defined by the angle between the Sun and the Moon, which changes throughout the lunar month. The calculator estimates that angle for noon on each date with a simplified formula, so its percentages can differ by a few points from an almanac.
Moon illumination is not romantic compatibility
The illuminated fraction depends on the approximate angular difference between the Sun and Moon at a given birthday. Roughly one person in thirty was born on any given day of the lunar cycle, so sharing a phase, or having opposite ones, is an everyday coincidence.
Moon phases and lunar calendars
New Moon, Full Moon, waxing and waning describe changes in lunar brightness. None identifies a destined romantic partner.
